De nombreux textes publiés au xixe siècle en France et au Canada se
penchent sur la figure de Marie de l’Incarnation. Le plus souvent, ce sont
des biographies rédigées par des membres du clergé rattachés à l’église du
Québec, proches de l’ordre des Ursulines, qui appuient le procès en béatification
de la missionnaire auprès de Pie IX. Cet article étudie la prolifération
de ces ouvrages à l’intérieur d’un triangle géographique et politique
transatlantique dont le troisième sommet est Rome. Dans ce mouvement
de redécouverte de la future sainte, les différentes Vies, dont celles écrites
par l’abbé Casgrain, le « père de la littérature canadienne-française », ne
poursuivent pas toutes le même but. Casgrain investit dans l’écriture biographique
des enjeux multiples qui pèsent sur la constitution du champ
littéraire du Canada français.
Numerous texts published in the 19th century in France and in Canada deal with
the figure of Marie de l’Incarnation. Most often, they are biographies written
by members of the clergy attached to the Church of Québec, close to the Ursuline
order, who support the process of beatification of the missionary initiated under
Pius IX. This article studies the proliferation of these works within a transatlantic
geographical and political triangle whose third vertex is Rome. In this
movement of rediscovery of the future saint, the different Vies, including those
written by the abbot Casgrain, the “father of the French-Canadian literature,” do
not all pursue the same goal. Casgrain invests in biographical writing multiple
issues which weigh on the constitution of the literary field of French Canada.
