Attraverso un’analisi testuale della produzione legislativa nell’impero occidentale del V secolo, si vuole evidenziare l’aggravarsi di problematiche già presentatesi nel secolo precedente, sul punto sia del reperimento dei materiali da costruzione, soprattutto di quelli nobili, come statue, marmi, colonne, sia delle risorse finanziarie. La destinazione delle risorse a disposizione delle città, che il legislatore tardo antico ripetutamente dispone che sia impiegato nel restauro di opere esistenti piuttosto che nella costruzione di edifici nuovi, evidenzia un problema di penuria finanziaria, acuita dal tracollo del sistema dell’evergetismo, che era stato il fulcro della politica edilizia delle civitates altoimperiali. Through a textual analysis of legislative output in the western empire of the Vth century, the paper aimes to highlight the worsening of problems already arisen in the previous century, both on finding construction materials, especially noble ones (such as statues, marble, columns), and of the retrieval of financial resources. The purpose of the resources at the disposal of cities, which the late imperial lawmaker repeatedly orders to be used in the restoration of existing buildings rather than in construction of new ones, highlights a problem of financial scarcity, exacerbated by the collapse of the system of evergetism, which had been at the heart of the housing policy of civitates in early empire.
