Dopo avere individuato nel romanzo
incompiuto Andreas o I riuniti di Hofmannsthal
una serie di tracce della tradizione del romanzo
antico, il saggio cerca di dimostrare come questi
elementi arrivino all’autore attraverso il filtro di
Goethe, il quale ha avuto per il romanzo antico,
e in particolare per Dafni e Cloe di Longo Sofista,
un’ammirazione convinta, tanto più interessante
se si considera quanto la filologia abbia tardato
a riconoscere i meriti e le prerogative del genere.
Dopo gli anni del distacco e della ribellione
all’idea di grecità statuita da Goethe e
Winckelmann, proprio attraverso l’Andreas
Hofmannsthal si riavvicina, integrandolo alla
propria visione, a quel grande patrimonio. Next to identifying in the Hofmannsthal’s
unfinished novel Andreas a series of traces of
the tradition of the ancient novel, the aim of the
present essay is to demonstrate how these elements
reach the austrian author through Goethe’s filter.
Goethe’s convinced admiration for the ancient
novel, and in particular for Daphnis and Chloe
by Longus, is more than interesting if we consider
how much philology has been behind the times to
recognize the merits and prerogatives of the genre.
After the years of detachment and rebellion
against the idea of Greece established by Goethe
and Winckelmann, it is through Andreas that
Hofmannsthal approaches, integrating it with his
own vision, that great heritage.
