Italy has one of the more developed programs in the Mediterranean to protect special coastal and marine areas. This contribute maps existing Italian Marine Protected Areas (MPA). Several of them employ strict zoning to designate the protected zone’s core areas. Ten of the 27 Italian MPAs are also Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI), sites of importance for conserving the Mediterranean’s biodiversity.
