The article tries to reconstruct the meeting between Jan and Stanisław Kostka Potocki, Izabella Lubomirska and Goethe and Herder in Karlsbad in summer 1785. The stay of Jan Potocki in Karlsbad in 1785 was unknown. Potocki's biographers F. Rosset and D. Triaire ignored it. The author of the article based for his research mainly on Stanisław Kostka Potocki's correspondence with his wife, on Goethe's and Herder's correspondence, last but not least he found in Cracow a letter of Jan Potocki to Herder from this year. Other witnesses from the entourage of the Polish and German company help to have an almost complete account of this less known chapter of the first stay of Goethe in Karlsbad.
