In this Thesis, I will address two general topics about socio-economic systems, relating to social choice theory (Part I) and to the properties of fluctuations in financial markets (Part II). Before describing the problems we will encounter, let
us discuss the general context in which these issues arise and also, why a physicist should care at all.
