Il capitolo de versuum generibus nel terzo libro dell’Ars grammatica di Diomede ha una grande importanza per gli studi sulla tradizione grammaticale e metrica latina poiché, nella sua ricchezza di analisi e osservazioni, ci conserva il contenuto del quinto libro dell’Ars di Carisio e molti frammenti di Varrone. La lettura di Diomede è assai impegnativa, come ha dimostrato lo Schultz, poiché la sua struttura sarebbe basata sull’intreccio di quattro fonti diverse. L’interpretazione dello Schultz va però corretta, perché relega ad un ruolo marginale il De metris di Cesio Basso, che invece, sul piano dell’argomentazione e degli esempi, fu un testo di riferimento primario per lo stesso Diomede. The chapter de versuum generibus in the third book of Diomedes’ Ars grammatica has a great importance for studies on the Latin grammar and metric tradition because, in its wealth of analysis and observations, retains us the content of the fifth book of Carisius’ Ars and many fragments of Varro. The reading of Diomedes is very challenging, as demonstrated by Schultz, because its structure is based on the interlacement of four different sources. The interpretation of Schultz must be corrected, because it relegates to a marginal role the De metris of Cesius Bassus, that was, on the arguments and examples, a primary reference text for the same Diomedes.
