Per illustrare il caso dell’eteronimo dispregiativo Katzelmacher, usato per designare gli italiani, sono presentati, in primo luogo, alcuni passi tratti dalla letteratura e dal tedesco corrente, allo scopo di dimostrare la presenza e la diffusione regionale del termine. In secondo luogo, è riferito come la parola sia attestata almeno fin dal XVIII secolo e ne siano state date spiegazioni etimologiche molto diverse fra loro. Si arriva alla conclusione che anche se l’etimologia del termine Katzelmacher può essere considerata accertata, dalle testimonianze letterarie e dall’uso nella lingua corrente, risulta ormai evidente che sulla parola hanno agito influssi trasversali, derivanti da interpretazioni e motivazioni secondarie fondate su una etimologia popolare attraverso la quale viene richiamato il significato che ciascuno vuole attribuire al significante: quindi uso e etimologia divergono decisamente. The essay proposes some passages taken from literary texts and from the current German language, in order to illustrate the case of the pejorative heteronomous ‘Katzelmacher’ (used to designate the Italians) and to demonstrate its presence and regional distribution. Secondly, the article points out that the term is documented at least since the 18th Century and illustrates the different existing etymological explanations of it.
The essay concludes, that, although the etymology of the term ‘Katzelmacher’ can be considered well established, literary witnesses and the use of the term in the current language demonstrate quite visibly how transversal influences (originating from secondary interpretations and motivations, based on a popular etymology which recalls the meaning each user wants to give to the signifier) had an impact on the word. For this reason, use and etymology differ considerably.
