The essay discusses the similarites between first and second humanism (in the 15th and 18th
century respectively), analyses the causes of both their differences and the collapse of the whole
humanistic tradition in the 20th century, and investigates which philosophical presuppositions a
possible resurgence of the humanistic tradition will have to satisfy.
