Abstract
This study aims to propose an approach that allow to create a hierarchical multi-level model pro terminal flow estimation, through an object oriented simulation, supported by analytical approach. This methodology is finalized to assist the stakeholders in the evaluation phase, creating a strong relationship between flow and infrastructure characteristics. Freight intermodal nodes are the focus of this work. The right tradeoff between the intermodal node layout design and freight flow throughput is the objective of this approach; if the flow is known, simulation will be used in order to obtain the infrastructural layout necessary to satisfy the demand, the flow, otherwise, if the offer is known, i.e the infrastructural layout, the simulation will be used in order to determine the potentiality of the terminal. In both cases, a preliminary analytical approach is used. This simple and fast methodologies allow to define a domain of acceptable solutions. In a second stage, taking into account the work finality, could be used the hierarchical multi-level simulation. An object oriented software, Flexsim CT, is used. This approach was applied at three real Italian intermodal nodes. In the paper the results will be discussed for a precision estimation based on real data.
