Drawing on Alessandra Melloni's essay, "Palabras, palabras, palabras... Formas de habla en la telenovela", in which she analyses the spoken language of Latin American Soap operas, I will focus on the so called "neutral" variety of Spanish. This is a variety which is typically used in mass media because it is not geographically or socially marked. I will consider it as a special case of rewriting/intralinguistic translation, thus I will discuss why the use of such variety does not allow the creation of reality effects and enunciative illusion.
