This book aims to be a practical and theoretical guide for training professional specialised translators and to provide a solid foundation for practising translators wanting to ground their decisions in translation theory. To do this, it gives a comprehensive overview of the key issues in specialised or ‘LSP’ translation, ranging from the distinctive features of the different types of documents in technical and scientific domains, through the translation problems of these texts and the strategies to solve them, to the quality of finished translation products. Within this framework a number of themes are explored, always with an eye to the professional world of translation: the role of specialised translation in today’s language industry and of English as the Lingua Franca of science and technology, ethical issues relating to the responsibility of the specialised translator, and the different levels of quality and types of revision procedures. It also includes relevant examples from existing translations.
