Word formation of adjectives comprises composition (faustdick), derivation (fruehlingshaft) and conversion (bedeutend). In some cases the semantic interpretation of adjectives is straightforward, in other cases it results from a complex interplay between different factors: the meaning of the single elements, lexicalisation patterns, and contex dependency. In this article attention is directed both to the understanding of complex adjectives as well as their creative use in context.
