Il Portovecchio di Trieste: problemi e opportunità per una geografia urbana in trasformazione

Una questione attuale di politica territoriale: semplicemente guardando la carta geografica dell’Italia e dell’Europa, è possibile individuare una serie di discontinuità, di vuoti, di spazi da recuperare, a volte abbandonati, che in genere equivalgono ad altrettante circostanze di diseguaglianza in qualsiasi senso – economica, sociale -, fino al punto di configurare veri e propri problemi di geografia. È il caso di ciò che rappresenta il Portovecchio per la città di Trieste: un’area che, attrezzata come porto e area industriale, nella seconda metà del XIX secolo, venne presto abbandonata perché diventata obsoleta e non più funzionale per i vari usi in un’epoca di rapidi cambiamenti. Oggi l’area si presenta come un’opportunità urbanistica, accessibile e strutturalmente integra, potenzialmente utile per varie iniziative, e utile soprattutto per recuperare un effetto di equilibrio territoriale per un’area molto vasta tra Mediterraneo ed Europa centrale. /// A current issue of territorial policy - By simply looking at the geo graphical map of Italy and Europe, it is possible to identify a series of discontinuities, empty and abandoned spaces to be recovered, which generally correspond to as many circumstances of inequality in any sense – economic , social -, to the point of configuring real geography problems. This is the case of what Portovecchio represents for the city of Trieste: an area which, equipped as a port and industrial area in the second half of the 19th century, was soon abandoned because it had become obsolete and no longer functional for the various uses in an age of rapid change. Today the area presents itself as an accessible and structurally intact urban planning opportunity, potentially useful for various initiatives, and above all useful for recovering an effect of ter ritorial equilibrium (and integration) for a very large hinterland be tween the Mediterranean and Central Europe
