In recent years, we are witnessing a re-emergence of interest in energy issues by the social sciences. The article outlines the state of the art and the future prospects of sociological studies on energy. It is structured in two parts: the first will go through the main stages of the relationship between sociology and energy, identifying the historical phases in which most of the studies and the types of approaches are thickened; the second part will identify the main issues faced by contemporary sociology, highlighting as well as in Italy there is a tradition of recent studies on energy. Finally, we will identify the main issues around which it is possible to develop the future research, with particular attention to the relationship between energy and power.
