Abstract
An erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) pumped at 980 nm operating in the unidirectional ring geometry is evaluated for its out-power characteristics. The laser cavity excludes bandpass filters. The emission wavelength is shown to be determined by the cavity loss or dopant concentration and EDF length. It is found possible to maximize the EDFL slope efficiency using relationship between dopant concentration, cavity loss, and EDF length.
