The essay analyzes two different elements of Alberto Mingardi’s book titled Capitalism: the ideology of merit and the political management of emergencies. Both of these elements contribute to the development of political attitudes and practices that are less and less respectful of citizens’ freedom and openly contrast with the decentralization of decision, which for Mingardi constitutes one of the essential features of capitalism.
