Nei suoi tratti essenziali la rappresentazione fisica del paesaggio aponense di ‘carm. min.’ 26 si compone dei tipici elementi del lago letterario (un’altura più o meno elevata, un nume che
vivifica il luogo, acque eccezionalmente limpide e fresche, vegetazione ipertrofica intorno al bacino) e pertanto si inserisce in quel filone lacustre alla cui definizione contribuirono Cicerone, Ovidio, Plinio il Giovane e Claudiano stesso. Tuttavia qui si valicano i confini retorici del ‘locus’ e si rilevano le peculiarità esclusive del territorio aponense: la descrizione è integrata da osservazioni scientifiche (analisi delle acque e della conformazione geologica del colle) e tecniche (attenzione alle strutture idrauliche e architettoniche disposte sul territorio).
L’originalità di questa prospettiva, che intende il paesaggio come visione integrata
di natura e cultura, si realizza attraverso il ricorso a ulteriori fonti e modelli, quali le ‘Selve’ staziane, l’epistolario pliniano e le ‘Naturales quaestiones’ senecane. The landscape described in ‘carm. min.’ 26 (‘Aponus’) consists of the typical features of the
literary lake (a height, a god that gives life to nature, extraordinarily limpid and cool waters, luxuriant vegetation around the basin), therefore Claudian refers to the literary stream that fixed the composition of the lake (Cicero, Ovid, Pliny the Younger and Claudian himself). Nevertheless the rhetorical frontiers of the ‘locus’ are crossed and we perceive the real and exclusive peculiarities of the territory. In fact the description is integrated by some scientific observations (a water test and a geologic analysis of the height) and technical observations (Claudian pays attention to the plumbing and to some architectural structures).
The originality of this perspective, meaning the landscape as an integration of nature and culture, is achieved referring to other models, such as Statius’ ‘Silvae’, Pliny’s ‘Epistulae’
and Seneca’s ‘Naturales quaestiones’.
