GLASNIK SLOVENSKE MATICE
Abstract
In this article, we find out how Cankar's attitude towards language is reflected in his political speeches. Of Cankar's seventeen attested political speeches and lectures, ten have been published in the Collected Works (ZD), and we have selected seven key speeches and lectures for our discussion, which are also freely available on Wikisource. Through corpus analysis and stylistic analysis, we found that Ivan Cankar, in accordance with his clear creative purpose and attitude towards language, certainly created a new language of Slovene prose, which is both elementary, natural, direct, both in terms of vocabulary and syntax, consistent with the truth and on the other just convincing, strong, even sharp. This also applies to his political speeches and lectures, where, as in literature, he strengthens the meaning of words and texts both with explicit modifiers and implicitly with unexpected semantic and grammatical patterns. In fact, the style of political speeches is similar to his prose, the only difference being that the vocabulary is less repeated in speeches, but more typical rhetorical figures are expected.
