The paper highlights how the narration of episodes of misunderstanding creates persuasive arguments in order to reverse the traditional centre-periphery perspective. In fact, several anecdotes aim at revealing the elusiveness of the “non-standard accent” notion, which appears devoid of meaning. Moreover, the author contests the French handling of misunderstandings, whenever it is made through heterocorrection of the “non-standard” variety. As the paper points out, this book was published at a turning-point in the perception of the French linguistic norm, in Quebec and many other “peripheral” French-speaking countries.
