Le registrazioni cartografiche degli spazi marini interessati dalla banchisa accompagnano in sede Ctorica i reiterati tentativi di forzare i passaggi a Nord Ovest, a Nord Est e verso lo stesso Polo, nello sforzo di aprire nuove rotte commerciali, di estendere gli orizzonti della conoscenza urmana e di rafforzare le sfere di giurisdizione, controllo e potere. Dal contatto ravvicinato con il «Mare Congelato», conseguito nell'Atlantico settentrionale da Pitea di Marsiglia, una parabola storica secolare culminerà il 17 agosto 1977 col raggiungimento del Polo Nord da parte di una prima unità di superficie.
