Munro in Translation: An Analysis of ‘The Bear Came Over the Mountain’

D. Saidero
2017
  • book part

Abstract
When analysing Munro’s oeuvre and its refractions, we find both Jackobson's interlingual translation, as her stories have been translated into many other languages and intersemiotic translation, as some of her stories have been adapted into filmic versions. Focusing on the special case of The Bear Came over the Mountain (2001) and its adaptation into the film Away From Her, this article examines the Italian translation of both the story by Susanna Basso and of the film Lontano da lei (2008). The analysis of the translational strategies adopted both in the interlingual and intersemiotic process is aimed not only at detecting the shifts and losses from one text to the other, but also at emphasizing the gains. Moereover, the adoption of a mixed literary and linguistic methodological apporach aims at demonstarting how any translation of a literary text, or analysis thereof, needs to take into account the critical readings of the orignal literary text to be fully successful.
