La possibilità per i geografi di poter usare nuove e sempre più sofisticate tecniche per la raccolta e l’elaborazione dei dati, ha fatto sì che aumentasse la loro capacità e precisione sia nella localizzazione, sia nella rappresentazione cartografica delle informazioni geografiche. I Sistemi Informativi Geografici si propongono ormai prepotentemente come il mezzo più idoneo per lo studio e la progettazione dello spazio nelle sue diverse componenti: da quelle naturali a quelle artificiali, dalle materiali alle immateriali. Così, gli aspetti relativi alla distribuzione territoriale di una popolazione urbana, nel caso specifico quella di Sassari, assumono rilevanza anche nella loro raffigurazione, non solo per gli studiosi, ma, e soprattutto, per coloro che sono preposti all’amministrazione della città ed hanno il compito di garantire il futuro della stessa. Geographers have to-date improved their possibilities of locating and cartographically representing geographic information, thanks to new and sophisticated techniques available. Geographic Information Systems can be considered one of the more adequate means of studying and planning space in its different components, as natural and human-made, physical and immaterial. The aspects related to the spatial distribution of urban population – the city of Sassari in this present case – are therefore relevant also in their representation, not only for researchers but also for the decision makers and city managers having the task of planning the future of the city itself.
