Obiettivo di questo paper è esaminare la vita auctoris, come parte delle questioni
isagogiche, al fine di valutare la sua importanza negli schemi di lettura dei
dialoghi di Platone. Se da una parte la vita auctoris è un elemento isagogico imprescindibile
prima dello studio dei dialoghi, dall’altra la Vita di Platone non è usata
con costanza nelle premesse ai singoli dialoghi o nella premessa al commento del
primo dialogo curricolare e talvolta circola separatamente rispetto al primo testo
dell’ordine di lettura e talaltra si trova incorporata a questo. Per indagare come la
Vita di Platone venga usata nelle classi dove si insegnava Platone si terranno in
considerazione non solo il Commento all’Alcibiade di Proclo e quello di Olimpiodoro
e i Prolegomena alla filosofia di Platone, ma anche testi biografici usati nelle
scuole di retorica da maestri pagani e cristiani. The aim of this paper is to examine the vita auctoris, within the context of the
isagogical questions, in order to evaluate its relevance in relation to the reading
schemes for Plato’s dialogues. While the vita auctoris seems to be an essential isagogical
element that comes before the study of the dialogues, the Life of Plato is not
consistently used in the prefaces to individual dialogues or to the commentary on
the first curricular dialogue. Sometimes it is circulated separately from the first text
in the reading order of the dialogues, while at other times it is incorporated into this
text. In order to investigate how the Vita Platonis was employed in classes where
Plato was taught, I will examine not only the Commentary on the Alcibiades by
Proclus and that by Olimpiodorus, along with the Prolegomena to Platonic philosophy,
but also some biographical texts used in grammar schools by pagan and
Christian teachers.
