Since the early days of film history, the commercial value of cinema has been considered as more important than its cultural relevance. In recent years however, the academic, ethical and institutional emphasis on film as a cultural element has increased dramatically. Cinema, as the art and historical archive of the twentieth century, has gained higher institutional legitimacy since the UNESCO conference recognised the status of films as artworks, and demanded proper conservation and preservation practices.
