The effect of a double frequency excitation is multifold: linear and nonlinear single resonances, combination resonances, connected with the sum/difference of frequencies, multiple resonances. These are relevant due to their connection with nonlinear beat phenomena, i.e. modulation of the amplitudes of the steady-state solutions. These give characteristic low frequency lines in the emitted noise spectrum.
