Abstract
Italy’s marginal territories are today the protagonists of a new centrality in public regeneration policies. This is a vast heritage to be valorised that precisely because of its vastness becomes impossible to regenerate in its totality. The research focuses on abandoned hamlets that are excluded from re- generation processes, hypothesising design practices that allow the eco- nomic and cultural value of which the buildings in these places are carriers to emerge. Starting from a typological analysis of rural architecture in north-eastern Italy, a process of disassembly is designed for abandoned buildings, in or- der to transform them into supply sites for stone recovery. The location of quarries for the extraction of stone materials, active in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is taken into consideration for the choice of intervention sites. The innovative design practice involves disassembling a building at the end of its operational phase, using the minimum amount of work and energy to generate the maximum number of reusable materials and the minimum amount of waste. Entering reused stone from abandoned buildings into a new circular econo- my process. An innovative operational methodological solution is explored as part of a series of design practices that aim to promote the sustainable evolution of the built environment and the construction sector, operating within strategic thematic areas concerning energy transition, environmen- tal challenges and adaptation to climate change.
