Lo scopo di questo saggio è provare che Paolino di Nola, nel verso iniziale della sua parafrasi
del primo Salmo, non solo adopera le parole introduttive del secondo epodo di Orazio, bensì
oppone l’intero carme a quello del Venosino. Poiché mentre l’usuraio oraziano inganna se
stesso, quando si figura una vita da ricco contadino tranquilla, il veramente beato, secondo
Paolino, è soltanto colui, la cui condotta di vita è moralmente irreprensibile ai sensi del Salmo,
sicché non occorre che egli tema il giudizio di Dio. Nel corso delle dettagliate riflessioni su
quel giudizio sulla scia di S. Ambrogio i versi 30s. non contribuiscono nulla allo sviluppo
dei pensieri logico e perciò sembrano superflui. Per questa ragione si propone di cancellarli. It is the aim of this essay to prove that in his paraphrase of psalm 1 Paulinus of Nola not
only borrows the introductory words from the beginning of Horace’s second epode, but that
the entire paraphrase is to be taken as forming a contrast to the poem of the Roman classical
author. For Horace’s usurer deludes himself with his dream of a blissful life as a rich farmer,
whereas Paulinus presents to the reader the psalm’s morally upright and consequently truely
happy man, who need not be afraid of the divine judgement. Within the extensive reflexions
upon that judgement, which can be traced back to St. Ambrose, the verses 30f. do hardly fit in
with the train of thought and seem superfluous. That is why they should be deleted.
