Abstract
In developed countries, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women; one-third of these deaths are directly or indirectly related to heart failure. Women already constitute the majority of heart failure patients and, given their longer life expectancy, the proportion of elderly women with heart failure is likely to increase further. These figures alone should make elderly women with heart failure a medical research and public health priority. On the contrary, they have received, and continue to receive, very little attention. Elderly women have been largely excluded from heart failure clinical trials and, compared with their male counterparts, are underrecognized and less intensively investigated and treated in clinical practice. Elderly women with heart failure are at increased risk for adverse outcomes because of higher comorbidity, psychological distress and socioeconomic disadvantage. Yet, they are often left alone to deal with these problems, which can negatively affect their ability to carry out basic self-care tasks.
