This paper is an introductory explanation of the concept of definite description that was brought to attention of philosophers since the publication of Bertrand Russell's “On Denoting” in 1905. The introduction focuses on the semantics of definite descriptions. After presenting the Russellian theory of definite descriptions and the way it is nowadays interpreted in terms of restricted quantifiers, the paper addresses the main objections raised against it and presents an assessment of the Contextualist theory of definite descriptions. Questo tema è una esposizione introduttiva della nozione di descrizione definita che si pose all'attenzione di filosofi e linguisti a partire dalla pubblicazione dell'articolo di Bertrand Russell intitolato “On Denoting” nel 1905. L'esposizione verte principalmente sulla semantica delle descrizioni definite. Dopo la presentazione della teoria russelliana e il modo in cui essa è oggigiorno recepita in termini di quantificatori ristretti, sono discusse le principali obiezioni che sono state mosse contro la teoria russelliana e per ultima è discussa la teoria contestualista delle descrizioni definite.
