Il lavoro vuole mettere in evidenza le difficoltà che possono insorgere da un commento
al libro IX della Institutio oratoria di Quintiliano attraverso una campionatura di
esempi: 1. la discussione dell’epitheton come figura in IX 1,6; 2. le varie interpretazioni
del concetto di figura in IX 1,10-14; 3. un problema testuale nella citazione ciceroniana
di IX 3,7. This paper aims at analyzing the difficulties which emerge from the commentary of the
ninth book of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria. The following cases will be treated in details:
1. the discussion of the epitheton as a figure in IX 1, 6; 2. the different interpretations of
the concept of “figure” in IX 1, 10-14; 3. a textual problem in the quotation from Cicero
in IX 3, 7.
