The aim of this research work is to analyze the determinants and the effects of these two form of patenting in the case of two Italian universities: University of Trieste and University of Udine, both located in Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
In this study, we use Social Network Analysis (SNA) to compare the co-invention network generated by the academic inventors, tenured by one of the two universities, in their patenting activity with several organizations – firms, public research organizations (PROs) – and the network of patents owned by one of the two Universities.
Our results give some insights on the connections between the University governance of patenting activity and the structural differences we have detected between the owned and invented networks.
