In this paper we deal with the difficulties posed by the placebo effect in the appraisal of hypotheses concerning the efficacy of treatments in medicine. We suggest that what we call the ‘efficacy hypotheses’ can be viewed as a special kind of causal statistical hypotheses, and that the principles governing their test and possible acceptance are provided by an appropriate statistical version of the principles of eliminative induction put forward by John Stuart Mill.
