Abstract
The closing decades of the 19th century witnessed a major historical step forward in recording the functional activity of the living human brain. The concept that mental activities provoke regional cerebral blood flow changes flourished at the time. Since 19th century scientists knew well that all forms of movement and activity determine a certain amount of heat, they conjectured that blood supply in response to mental states might also reflect increased thermogenetic phenomena in the brain.
