Il presente contributo analizza nel dettaglio la glossa MV339 del Liber Glossarum,
dedicata al lemma musica, e si concentra sull’indagine delle possibili fonti del testo e della
sua composizione. Infatti, in questa glossa la base isidoriana, indicata da Lindsay come
unica fonte, viene in realtà completata da passaggi ‘inediti’, caratterizzati da problemi
testuali e per i quali l’individuazione del modello rimane controversa. L’articolo propone
ipotesi relativamente ai passaggi più oscuri (quelli dedicati alla nascita della musica
e ai suoi antichi inventori) unendo la ricerca di possibili fonti alla riflessione sul processo
stesso di compilazione del Liber Glossarum e di costruzione delle singole glosse. The present paper deals with gloss MV339 of the Liber Glossarum, devoted to the lemma
musica, and it aims at shedding some light on its sources and on the process of its composition.
Even though Isidore’s Etymologiae have been indicated by Lindsay as the only source
for this gloss, MV339 is composed by different sections, including unidentified passages characterised
by textual corruption. The paper focuses especially on these sections, providing hypotheses
about their meaning and about the sources of some of its most difficult and obscure
portions (the invention of music), trying at the same time to offer some insights into the
composition process of the Liber and its glosses.
