Abstract
This study aims to identify the influence of the mother tongue on the acquisition of verbal morphology in French as a foreign language. Initially, among our Italian learners, we see the recurrence of typical deviant forms such as je dorm(e) or je viv(e), very similar to the Italian forms vivo and dormo, also found, however, in other non-Latin populations. By comparing the morphological competence of different populations of learners, we were able to characterize the interlanguage of Italian learners through the morphological variation identified in our tests. Based on our results, we can say that there is a co-occurrence of factors: on the one hand the verbal morphology of the learners is characterized by typical deviant forms generated especially by intra-language influences, particularly the overgeneralization of the regular conjugation system. On the other hand, the observation of cognate forms clearly shows that there are positive or negative influences of the mother tongue, essentially regarding the base forms (stems or roots).
