The chapter is included in a handbook that analyzes criminology studies at the international level. The essay considers the state of the art of criminology studies in Italy. Starting from an overview of the Italian society at the economic, social and political levels, the essay presents a detailed analysis of the legal system in Italy. A section of the chapter is dedicated to examining the discipline from its birth to its subsequent development in Italy. It also includes a look at Italy’s principal research institutes and the main research directions through which the discipline has developed through today.
