Abstract
This paper illustrates the attempts to limit power in Russia between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the tradition of the Byzantine origins of the imperial autocracy. The direct link between the ancient authority of Byzantium and the authority of the tsars in the modern age would have made the muscovite ruler very resilient. The author argues that the characteristics of the autocratic power may have lead to the failure of the efforts to reduce it.
