Italian perception of the Turkish Candidacy to the European Union.

SCAINI, MAURIZIO

  • book part

Abstract
Much of the anxiety linked to Turkish membership in the E.U. is more a function of broader socio-economic change than a rational response to the impact of globalisation. There are several reasons why public opinion appears immune to clever arguments in favour of Turkish accession. In both the E.U. and Turkey, the debate about Turkey accession is really a proxy for much wider and often unrelated, issues. The following article considers the italian case, comparing its geopolitical stance with other European countries.
