The paper aims to highlight the relationships between the environmental crisis and the fiscal crisis of the state, investigating how ecological and welfare systems interact in the Italian inner areas. Starting from this territorial posture, some hypotheses will be formulated on the mending of the co-evolution relationship between environment and society, to regenerate environmental economies and produce wealth in favor of the reconstruction of the system of services for the inhabitants of these areas. Starting from these experiences, we will try to outline some indications that can be functional to the innovation of welfare systems, working on sustainable economies that reconnect inner areas and cities.
