Die napredni muslimani publizierten Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Zeitungsbeiträge, Essays und Prosawerke, in denen sie sowohl die Modernisierungsprozesse Westeuropas als auch in der islamischen Welt diskutierten. Sie propagierten – beeinflusst von den französischen Aufklärern – eine Abwendung von Tradition und religiösem Fanatismus. Stattdessen forderten sie die Hinwendung zu Fortschritt, Verstand und individueller Eigenverantwortung. Dieser Diskurs hatte auch große Auswirkungen auf ihre Lyrik: Safvet beg Bašagić und Musa Ćazim Ćatić lösten sich von den Formalismen der islamischen Kunstdichtung und integrierten in ihre Gedichte westeuropäische literarische Strömungen. Dabei kamen sie zu vollkommen unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen: Der Wissenschaftler und Pädagoge Bašagić wandte sich dem Lehrgedicht nach Horaz zu; der Künstler Ćatić machte sich auf die Suche nach einem ästhetischen Islam. Es entstanden lyrische Mischformen, wie sie in diesem Ausmaße nur in der bosnisch-muslimischen Poesie der Jahrhundertwende zu finden sind. The napredni muslimani, a small group of Bosnian-Muslim intellectuals, published essays, tracts and newspaper articles at the end of the 19th century, in which they discussed the process of modernisation taking place as well in Europe as in the Islamic world. They propagated – influenced by the French proponents of the Enlightenment – a renunciation of tradition and religious fanatism. Instead they wanted to implement progress, reason and individual responsibility. This discourse also influenced their poetry: Safvet beg Bašagić und Musa Ćazim Ćatić let go of the formalism of the Persian and Arabic poetic traditions and integrated Western European literary styles into their lyric. Being equipped with the same political interests, the authors came to completely different results: The scientist and pedagogue Bašagić introduced the didactic poem to the Bosnian audience; the artist Ćatić explored the aesthetics of Islam. Both developed hybrid forms of lyricism, as the can only be found in the Bosnian-Muslim poetry at the turn of the century.
