CONFINI, CARTOGRAFIA E IDENTITÀ: L'ESEMPIO DELLA FRONTIERA COLONIALE TRA GHANA E TOGO BORDERS, CARTHOGRAPHY AND IDENTITY: THE CASE OF THE COLONIAL FRONTIER BETWEEN GHANA AND TOGO

La cartografia, adottata storicamente nel processo di fissazione delle frontiere, oltre a legittimarne il ruolo politico, ha funzionato quale strumento privilegiato di comunicazione occidentale veicolante una certa visione del mondo. Quest'ultima, anch'essa di stampo occidentale, ha escluso la visione delle popolazioni che abitavano i luoghi cartografati, la quale è stata viceversa annullata o investita di attribuzioni indebite. In questa prospettiva, adottando le nuove teorie semiotiche, si tenta di mostrare come la carta sia un vero e proprio operatore simbolico, in grado di imporre una precisa e definita idea di frontiera. Allo stesso tempo, viene evidenziato il ruolo giocato dal confine nel far emergere nuove consapevolezze di appartenenza identitaria da parte delle popolazioni africane. Ciò è stato esemplificato Seguendo le rappresentazioni cartografiche della frontiera tra Ghana e Togo. Boundary cartography – historically used within the process of boundaries fixation - in addition to legitimating their political role, has functioned as privileged tool of Occidental communication, transmitting a precise idea of the world. This latter, which is also inspired by an Occidental logic, has excluded African reality to which Western values are illegitimately superimposed. in this perspective, according to some new semiotic theories, we try to demonstrate that the map is a real symbolic operator able to communicate a precise and definite idea of boundary. Meanwhile, it is underlined the role played by the frontier in the emerging of new awareness of share identities among African populations.
