La vita di Ravenna è segnata dal 540 d.C. fino all’VIII secolo inoltrato dalla presenza di contingenti militari dell’esercito imperiale. L’esame combinato delle testimonianze letterarie, documentarie, iconografiche ed epigrafiche relative ai soldati, oltre che lo studio delle chiese intitolate ai santi militari, permette nuove considerazioni. Una campagna di prospezioni geofisiche svolta presso la chiesa dei Ss. Giovanni e Paolo offre nuovi argomenti per la lettura del fenomeno della cristianizzazione della città e della sacralizzazione del suo circuito di mura per mano dei militari. The life of Ravenna is marked since 540 CE up to the late VIIIth century by the presence of military contingents of the imperial army. The examination of the literary, documentary, iconographic and epigraphic sources relating to soldiers, as well as the study of the churches dedicated to military saints, allows us to present new considerations. A geophysical prospecting campaign carried out near the Ss. Giovanni e Paolo’s church offers new arguments for reading the phenomenon of the christianization of the town and the sacralization of its circuit of city walls.
