Il saggio ripercorre le tappe più significative della relazione epistolare tra Paul Celan e Ingeborg Bachmann, dall’incontro a Vienna nel 1948 fino al 1961, soffermandosi su una particolare forma di Brief, la lettera in versi, a cui Celan ricorre di frequente e con continuità nella corrispondenza con Bachmann. Diversamente dagli studi finora condotti sul carteggio, incentrati su questioni biografiche o storico-sociali, l’articolo considera le lettere in versi non solo come strumento per comprendere biografia, storia, poetica ma in quanto espressione di un genere testuale prediletto da Celan nella corrispondenza. Vengono quindi analizzate poesie spedite da Celan in momenti chiave della relazione: In Ägypten (In Egitto), nel 1948 da cui emerge la condizione di esilio del poeta che si rivolge alla “straniera”, Inge, Weiß und Leicht (Bianco e leggero) e Köln, am Hof (Colonia, Am Hof), inviate nel 1957 alla ripresa della relazione in cui “i sognati” (“die Geträumten”), “esule e perduta” (“verbannt und verloren”), vagano e poetano in un paesaggio onirico, in un mare di sabbia “bianca e leggera” (“Weiß und Leicht”), in una “U-topie” e in un “Herzzeit” in cui tuttavia mai è comunque possibile dimenticare il proprio compito, la necessità di fare memoria “Gedenken” attraverso la poesia.
The essay retraces the most significant stages in the epistolary relationship between Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann, from their meeting in Vienna in 1948 until 1961. Special attention will be devoted to a particular form of letter, the verse letter, to which Celan frequently and continuously resorts in his correspondence with Bachmann. Unlike the studies on the exchange of letters conducted so far – focused on biographical or socio-historical issues – this article considers verse letters not only as tools for casting light on one’s biography, history and poetry, but also and above all as expressions of a textual genre preferred by Celan in his correspondence. The analysis will thus be centered on poems sent by Celan in defining moments of their relationship: In Ägypten (In Egypt) of 1948, where the poet’s status of exile clearly comes out as he addresses the “foreigner” (Ingeborg); Weiß und Leicht (White and light) and Köln, am Hof (Cologne, At the Station), both sent in 1957 as their relationship resumes, in which “those we dreamt” (“die Geträumten”), “banished and vanished” (“verbannt und verloren”), wander and poetize in an oneiric landscape, in a sea of “white and light” sand (“Weiß und Leicht”), in a “U-topie” and in a “Herzzeit” where it is never possible to forget one’s task, that is the urge to build memory (“Gedenken”) by means of poetry.
