A characterization of the sporadic group of Lyons

We show that Lyons' sporadic simple group is the unique finite simple group $G$ that is simultaneously of weak characteristic $r$-type and characteristic $p$-type for odd $r$ and $p$ with $r<p$ and $m_{r,p}(G)\geq 2$.
