Słownik literatury popularnej czy Słownik rodzajów i gatunków literackich oraz z najpopularniejszych monografii poświęconych tej tematyce, charakteryzuje problemy, dotyczące ustalenia granic gatunkowych i wskazania wyznaczników formalnych powieści kryminalnej. Podsumowując dotychczasowe próby definicyjne, autorka proponuje także własne ujęcie problemu. The definitions are widely considered to be the most important part of the literary criticism. The aim of the paper is to shed a light on the definitions of a crime novel and a detective novel in the Polish literary studies since the beginning of 20-th century. This review equates the definitions in dictionaries such as Słownik terminów literackich, Słownik literatury popularnej, and Słownik rodzajów i gatunków literackich. This paper discusses the main theoretical problems and the crucial distinctions among the various theories of the crime fiction. In conclusion authoress proposes the new, basic definition of the crime novel.
