The manuscript on the Turkish language by Giovan Battista Montalbano kept at the Biblioteca Nazionale of Naples, dated between 1625 and 1632, has already been studied in some papers by the late Aldo Gallotta. Nevertheless, its main part, comprising two substantial Turkish-Latin glossaries, still remains to be examined. A perusal of these glossaries reveals that a number of words are copied from Megiser’s dictionary, but many others are the fruit of Montalbano’s own la-bour. The most interesting are, in our opinion, loanwords of European origin, which are dealt with in this article; many of them prove very important from the historical-lexicographical viewpoint either for being hapax legomena or presenting an unusual phonetic aspect or for allowing us to backdate their first occurrence.
