It reappraises the foreign trade in the Greek states focusing upon polis control over import and export commodities and traders and with a longue durée approach. By the extensive use of sample literary and epigraphic texts it is provided an overview of these topics: the private context of foreign trade, the “honor and profit” system, the border checking of persons and goods, the tax regime on import-export.
