Una pratica di memoria della Prima Guerra Mondiale e identità comune europea: immagini e riflessioni dei visitatori museali

L’Europa, come oggetto di interesse sociologico, ha stimolato studi e riflessioni attorno al concetto d’identità europea multipla, dalle pluri-appartenenze tipica della società moderna, de-territorializzata, fluida e globalizzata. La costruzione dell’identità europea non può ridursi alla somma delle singole identità nazionali e non può nemmeno limitarsi alle categorizzazioni tipiche del nation-building, perché insufficienti nel dare conto del processo di auto-comprensione e riconoscimento dei soggetti come appartenenti ad una comunità. La memoria collettiva assicura, invece, la continuità con il passato e permette ai singoli e ai gruppi di intrecciare la propria memoria con quella degli altri, riconoscendo significati comuni. La ricerca di una via debole della costruzione dell’identità europea, con un approccio bottom-up, che a partire dalle immagini, dai simboli e dai valori ritenuti significativi per i visitatori di musei della Grande guerra, può diventare uno strumento per pensare al Progetto Europa volto al riconoscimento dell’alterità e in grado di suggerire percorsi identitari che grazie alle pratiche di memoria possano proiettarsi verso il domani. As an object of sociological interest, Europe has stimulated the study and the analysis of the concept of European multiple identity. Multi affiliations are a feature of the modern society, which is deterritorialized, fluid and globalized. The shaping of the European identity cannot be reduced to summing individual national identities and cannot be limited to the typical categories of the nationbuilding perspective, the latter would be inadequate to grasp the process of self-consciousness and the recognition of a community. The continuity with the past is assured by a collective memory, which at the same time allows the individuals and the groups to weave their memories together and to recognize some common meanings. The images, the symbols and the meaningful values, to which the visitors of the WWI museums are exposed, can help to trace a weak way to the shaping of the European identity. This bottom-up approach could become useful in the European Project, assuming the recognition of otherness and of the identity paths through the practices of memory as its goals in the future.
