In this paper an outline of European and Italian Research in the field of Maritime Technology is given. For the first time waterborne transport receives a specific attention distinct from that of aeronautics. This is due to the concurrent action of the coordination groups of Maritime Industry and Maritime Technology Universities. Moreover, the introduction of the financial support to Thematic Networks aimed at clustering projects proved its power. At the same time in Italy, also as a consequence of the progressive integration in European Research, the concepts of peer refereed research projects and of partial financial support have been introduced in the research funded by the Ministry of University and Scentific and Technological Research.
